Kings Theatre opens in time for Calendar Girls

Phase 2 of the five phase Kings Theatre restoration was completed in a very tight six week timescale and handover was achieved just before the start of the hit summer show Calendar Girls for which the Kings was fully booked.

As a refurbishment of an historic building, it would have been surprising if things had gone exactly to plan - and so it proved, with one or two last minute glitches which had to be resolved by quick thinking and increased resources being deployed. An excellent team effort from our site management and supply chain resulted in handover on schedule.

That’s it over now until next summer when we look forward to the opportunity of working on phase 3.

1920’s Newspaper found intact at the Kings

Allan Cockburn and Chris Bell reading the find - a newspaper from 1920, virtually intact!

Builders working on the latest phase of a revamp at a Glasgow theatre have unearthed a newspaper almost as old as the building. Workers uncovered the 90-year-old paper behind a panel at the King’s Theatre as they worked on its £7.2million facelift. A flyer from 1920 advertising a show called ‘Our Miss Gibbs’ was also found as they removed seats in the upper circle and carried out structural work.

The newspaper, the Glasgow Evening News which is no longer published, is from Saturday May 8, 1920. A spokesman for the King’s, which opened in 1904, said: “It’s a rather exciting find. They brought it to us with some other bits they found including a flyer - and a box of fruit pastilles which we think was from the 1970s!

“The most exciting thing is it’s in good nick for being 90 years old, and it has adverts in it for the King’s and Theatre Royal.”

“The person probably had it in their pocket and it somehow found its way to where it was found.”

Headlines of the day include 12 more cases of smallpox being reported in the city as part of an epidemic, taking the total to 84.

Patients were taken to the now-closed Belvidere Infectious Diseases Hospital off London Road.
Brad and Angelina of the time, Hollywood couple Mary Pritchard and Douglas Fairbanks also made the front page because their honeymoon was postponed after her divorce was contested.
More than 5000 joiners went out on strike, demanding a pay rise to 2s 6d per hour and in football, Celtic beat Rangers 2-1.

Entertainment of the day included smash-hit farcical play Charley’s Aunt at the King’s, while most cinemas were showing films starring Charlie Chaplin.

Site manager Chris Bell, 41, from Project Management and Construction Limited, said: “It was one of our operatives who found it. The show must have been pretty dull for somebody to bring a paper in!”

The Evening News was published from October 4 1915 to January 17 1957.

Further work at the theatre includes the installation of a new stage plus returning the old grand saloon bar to its former splendour which will be completed in time for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
